Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) &
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
to address the challenges of formal and informal
education in Tanzania.
five major programs initiated at the request of Tanzanian educators:
Skill development for secondary school teachers
Instruction for women leaders focusing on life skills,
communication, family health and nutrition
A father/son program for pastors and evangelists which covers
communication, responsibilities of power and authority, and
stewardship in home and community
HIV/AIDS instruction, integrated into all programs
A computer literacy program for teachers
Since its inception in 1996, Mwangaza has been
located in the
Teachers' Resource Centre, the
organizational headquarters, outside Arusha,
Tanzania. What began with five companion
synods (ELCA) and dioceses (ELCT) now includes
all 20 dioceses of the ELCT. The ELCA
mission/educator, who directed the first seven
years of the program, is now consultant. There
are three professional staff conducting the work
of Mwangaza; all are Tanzanian.

Education for Leadership in a Global World
Mwangaza, a Kiswahili word meaning enlightenment, guides the partnership's work as it promotes teaching, learning
and leadership development
for Tanzanian schools in the companioned regions of these national church bodies.

Tanzania faces an
educational famine as one of the lowest ranking countries in the world in its inability to educate
its youth. Mwangaza's mission is to provide leadership training for teachers, women, and men in response to this
critical need.
